Grade 5 Math Grading Policy and Expectations
My goal in math is to help my students gain confidence as they become independent learners. Along with teaching math I strive to show students how to use resources to help when they become confused or unsure.

Homework - There are two types of homework grades: Daily Homework Completion and (weekly) Spiral Reviews. All students will start with a 100% for the “Daily Homework Completion” assignment. If a student does not complete a homework assignment or doesn’t have it in class on the date it’s due, 5 points will be deducted from this grade. Spiral reviews will be given each week on a Friday and are due the following Friday. These reviews will be collected and graded each week. We encourage students to start these assignments early and ask questions before the assignment is due. Your child should reference the notes in his/her math binder when completing homework. Working lunch detentions may be issued for frequently forgotten homework.
Quizzes and Tests: Your child will be assessed at various points through the year. Some assessments will be formative (i.e. quizzes throughout a unit), and some will be summative (unit tests). It is important that your child prepare for these assessments. If your child earns below an 80 on an assessment, they will be given the opportunity to improve their score. They will meet with the teacher to go over the skill(s) they struggled with, and will then have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of these skills after receiving extra help.
